Coils Twines And Knots
Contemporary Baskets by Paula Baumann
Creating baskets started ten years ago when Paula hand coiled her first vessel with macramé cord wound with rusted rayon cloth that was displayed with rusted rebar wire. Today each basket is unique in color, design and material combinations whether created by zig zag stitching on hand dyed cotton cord, twined from Irish waxed linen or coiled with paper yarn from Italy and Austria. Paula’s dyeing processes on cord often include natural dyes such as turmeric or madder root for one of a kind hues. Pre-dye techniques create Ombre, Shibori and multi-colored stripes. With plastic inserts, her cord baskets are a perfect splash of color for keeping onions, lemons or apples on a kitchen counter. In addition, Paula twines Mini baskets formed with imported Irish waxed linen in several weights. They are perfect for holding pencils, markers, paper clips or for just adding a splash to that office desk or coffee table. One of a kind coiled, twined and woven baskets can also be found on her website. Paula is a BFA graduate of Xavier University – Cincinnati with a concentration in textiles.
