Genna Carter of justGenna designs is an out-of-the-box or blue bin recycle artist. Inspired by memories of her Depression Era Grandmother and her functional repurposing of common household items, Carter began business approximately 8 years ago in recycled button bracelets. Each design was artistically created to be a one-of-a-kind with a combination of vintage and contemporary recycled buttons. Business soon grew to rescuing salvage wood. Whether fallen barns or farmers’ discards, Carter seeks to keep wood from landfill destination and freehand paint signs for home décor. Forever unique and quirky, many of Carter’s signs are offbeat in inspiration or sarcastic insight. Having grown up at the beach, Carter’s wardrobe mainly consisted of tshirts which inspired and lead to the recycling of tshirts into creative, ooak tshirt skirts. Many skirts are uniquely theme based; messages of hope, inspiration, humor, destinations, fandom to name a few. The newest line has been a “Zerowaste” line in which the entire skirt is designed from leftover scraps from other skirts and projects that would have otherwise been disposed of into the landfill. Carter is constantly reevaluating and trying to identify functional and artist ways to repurpose and reduce items headed to the landfill. As a new Durham Craft Market member, come out and see what Carter has created that might inspire you to recycle differently.Artist bio
